Why Roseanne Got Fired and Jimmy Didn’t

It’s just been announced that Jimmy Kimmel’s show will return on Tuesday- and for one I am glad.

So let’s get this straight once and for all, because I am so tired of people pretending Roseanne Barr and Jimmy Kimmel are “the same thing.”

They’re not.

Not even close.

Roseanne decided to hop on Twitter (she blamed it on Ambien) and fire off a racist, dehumanizing attack at Valerie Jarrett — a Black woman. That wasn’t “edgy humor.” That wasn’t “free speech.” That was straight-up racism dressed up as a bad joke. And ABC did exactly what they should have done: pulled the plug. Actions, consequences.

Jimmy Kimmel? He’s a late-night comedian doing what late-night comedians have always done — roast the powerful. Presidents, politicians, billionaires — fair game. Don’t like his jokes?

Change the channel.

But stop pretending that holding politicians’ feet to the fire with comedy is the same as spewing hate at someone’s race. It isn’t.

And for those clutching their pearls about the FCC: they don’t exist to babysit your feelings.

Full stop.

Thir job is to regulate obscenity and indecency on broadcast, not jokes about spray tans and bad policies.

Political satire is protected speech. Racism is just racism, AND yes, racist speech is technically protected under the First Amendment BUT racist speech is not “consequence-free.”

ABC/Disney are private companies. They can choose to cancel a show if they decide a star’s words don’t align with their brand. That’s their call.

The United States government, however, has no business leaning on networks to silence voices just because they don’t like the message. That’s textbook First Amendment violation.

If politicians / the government successfully strong-arms ABC, Disney, CBS, or NBC into canceling shows that criticize them, what’s next?

Silencing journalists? Shutting down satire?

That’s not freedom — that’s authoritarianism in action.

So yes, I’m proudly Team Jimmy. Because there’s a world of difference between punching up at power and punching down with hate. And if you can’t tell the difference? That says more about you than it does about Jimmy.

Go ahead stop following me. I’m good with that.

About Me

Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest—back when dinosaurs roamed the Earth (or so it feels some mornings)—I’m what you’d call “seasoned.” After a lifetime of wandering around this big, quirky United States, collecting stories, bad habits, and questionable furniture, I’ve found myself right back where I started. Guess home really does call you back, like a determined telemarketer.

This blog? It’s… well, it’s everything and nothing, really. A hodgepodge of childhood memories, random musings, opinions no one asked for, and the occasional tangent about whatever pops into my brain at 3 a.m. Think of it as my mental junk drawer—only slightly more organized and with fewer rubber bands.

If you’re into stories about the good old days (when TV had antennas and phones had cords), reflections on life’s oddities, or just want to hang out in the mind of someone who thinks they’re funnier than they probably are—welcome.

Grab a cup of coffee, settle in, and let’s take a trip through my scribbles. It’s part nostalgia, part nonsense, and all me. If nothing else, I promise you’ll leave here either entertained, confused, or both.

Stick around—there’s plenty more where this came from.
